Gerald Coulson original oil on canvas paintings for sale – Aviation & landscape

I’ve been collecting Gerald Coulson’s art for several years and have a private collection of original oil on canvas paintings currently in storage that I have now decided to sell.

Some are landscape paintings that showcase his skill with light and others are sought-after aviation paintings. The prices will range from £400 upwards. I also have for sale his famous painting “Striking Back” featuring two Typhoons taking off.

Location

The paintings are all located in the south of England, near South East London.

Authenticity

These paintings are all genuine Coulson origins and you can inspect them yourself or bring an art expert to verify their authenticity if you prefer.

1. Moonlit Lancaster Bomber **SOLD**

Unfortunately, I don’t have a great camera so my pictures don’t really do this painting justice but nevertheless, this painting showcases Gerald Coulson’s skills with oil and his love of aviation. It’s very large and is a totally one-off original as it’s never gone to print, not even for a limited edition run. Coulson’s aviation work is much-sought-after and fetches a considerably higher price than his landscape paintings.

Frame Dimensions – 112.5cm x 87.5cm

2. Striking Back **SOLD**

This is the original oil on canvas painting “Striking Back”. It’s one of his most well-known aviation paintings which had a limited edition print run of only 650 copies. This painting will also come with the hardback book of his work “The Masterworks” by John Blake along with two very rare and original A4 sized booklets published by Solomon And Whitehead to promote his work. One is specific to “Striking Back” to commemorate Operation Overlord 1944 and the other contains details of his other limited edition aviation prints. This painting depicts two typhoons of the 2nd T.A.F. taking off, each laden with 2x1000lbs bombs. The Normandy dust contributes to the back-drop.

3. Shepherd in Winter ***SOLD***

Once again, my camera doesn’t do this serene oil on canvas justice. The painting is very large and captures the shepherd’s wintery solitude perfectly.

Frame Dimensions – 107cm x 77cm – Price – ***SOLD***

4. Misty Morning

This original oil on canvas of a serene lake is approx. 70cm wide and is a bit dirty so could do with a clean. Apologies for the dreadful, slightly blurry images.

Price – £850 ono

5. Young Stag

This is another original oil on canvas of a young stag in the forest. I’m especially fond of this one because it’s a precursor to what is perhaps Coulson’s most famous landscape painting, “Quiet Forest” which is similar but the stag is fully mature in his masterpiece. As far as I recall, Quiet Forest sold around half a million copies and could be seen decorating the walls of countless homes up and down the UK.  This painting has beautiful colours in it which really come out under decent lighting. However, like the painting above, it’s dirty and would benefit enormously from a clean. There are many good videos on YouTube that show how this can be done at home; I did intend to do this with both but just never got around to it. The size is the same as the painting above – Approx. 70cm wide I think. Apologies for the appalling quality of my photos.

Price – £1200 ono

6. Lake Reflections & Calm Water (Sold as a pair)

These oils are sold only as a pair. They are both beautiful and in fabulous condition and were exhibited/sold in the Halcyon Gallery together. Both are approx. 56cm wide including the frame and complement each other perfectly. I’ll upload pics of both as soon as I get the chance.

Price – £2000 ono

7. Sunrise over the Cambridge Fens

This original oil on canvas truly highlights Gerald Coulson’s skill with sunlight as the morning sun rising behind a cloud. It’s approx. 56cm wide (including frame) and perfectly captures the morning tranquillity. Photos to follow shortly…

Price – £TBC

8. Lancasters (Original oil on canvas – Keith Aspinall)

Although perhaps not as well-known as Gerald Coulson, Keith Aspinall was still an accomplished aviation artist. Sadly, Keith passed away in 2007 but prints of his work are still widely available on the internet. This isn’t a print, it’s an original oil on canvas. Although it was Coulson’s work I was fond of collecting, I saw this painting of four Lancasters and liked it so much that I bought it as it’s strikingly similar to another of his paintings, “Lincolnshire Winter”. The painting is in excellent condition, with sharp, bright colours. Unfortunately, the reflecting camera light spoils this slightly in the photos below  – More pics to follow soon.

Price – £600
